History of the appearance of board games in the world.
Hi all. Today I would like to start my first article in my blog about board games. Why exactly about board games? Well, firstly, because I am interested in this and it seems to me that there are people who like board games in SG. It is these people who will be devoted to this blog, as well as attract those who have not yet been addicted to this exciting world of board games. But before starting to talk about specific board games, I would like to talk about the very origins of the origin of such a new entertainment as board games.
The history of board games has at least 5500 years. In modern studies of board games, the opinion is expressed that their history was general. So, veteran of board games, English scientist David Parlett in his research work “Oxford History of Borating Games” believed that all, even the most modern board games have the oldest prototypes and, therefore, common roots.
The oldest of the board games is the ancient Egyptian game Senet.
As secular entertainment, it is known in the pre -dynastic period (about 3,500 years BC. e.), in later times, he began to be associated with travel to the other world. The first finds of gaming sets for the senet were made at the beginning of the 20th century. First, the researchers considered these palettes with figures by ancient chess, after – checkers, but later it turned out that the game had very little in common with them.
The next one of the oldest games is backgammon.
NARDS – Ancient Eastern Game. The homeland of this game is definitely not known, but it is known that people have been playing this game for more than 5,000 years, which has been historical evidence. So, the oldest of the blacksmiths for playing backgammon was found on the territory of Iran (in Shakhri-Sukhta) and dates about 3000 years BC. e. The analogue of this game was found in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun (XV BC. e.).
The first Indian board game in today’s history will be Chapar.
According to one version, Chapar arose in the 4th century n. e. However, Chapar is mentioned in the ancient Indian epic “Mahabharata” (and the outcome of the game affects the fate of the states and their rulers). An interesting fact. Chaupar is one of the favorite games of Maharaja. Everyone who has once been to the Palace of the Indian Emperor Akbar the Great from the Mughal dynasty can be convinced of this. A huge playing field in the middle of the court is laid out red and white marble. Once the beautiful concubines of the imperial harem moved through the cells of this field, who served him with live chips. Similar fields for playing chaupar have survived in Aggra and Allahabad.
If you think that Majong is the first board game created by the Chinese, then you are mistaken. The first was a game called GO.
Legends reflected in ancient Chinese chronicles attribute the appearance of go to the third or the beginning of the second millennium BC, attributing its creation to one of the legendary Chinese emperors or their nearest court. Objective historical evidence suggests that the game definitely existed and was quite common 2500 years ago – it was these times that the first mention of go in the documents. The first material evidence (the boards and stones found by archaeologists and the reliable records of the played parties dates back to the first centuries of our era.
Well, finally, the game that everyone probably played has appeared.
History did not preserve reliable information about the invention of checkers. It is likely that various cheesecake games have been invented throughout the history of mankind many times and independently, which was facilitated by the simplicity of inventory and rules. It is believed that the now -known games of the checker type are various stages of the evolution of games on the board, so that they are all in a certain sense related to each other, which is confirmed by the proximity of the inventory and the names of the games. So, the names of the checkers: the Russian “Tastey” and the Polish “Warcaby” are associated with the European name of the Nard Game: Tavola Reale (in Italy), Tables Reales (in Spain), Tavli (in Greece), Tavla (in Turkey), Tables or Backgamon (in the UK), VRHCABY(in the Czech Republic). The most ancient images of players in the game, defined as a variant of checkers, are still in the monuments of ancient Egypt. To the peoples who inhabited the territory of present -day Russia and the surrounding regions, checkers were known in the III century. The history of the appearance of the checkers is very great, so I will not describe it all of it now.
And here is a board game from Korea called https://partyspins.uk/ Changi.
Changi is read by a derivative of the Chinese game of Syantsi. It is played on a almost similar board, the same set of figures, but has several different rules.
The first Japanese game in our history will be a board game.
According to modern historians, the shoes are a separate branch of chess. The moment of the appearance of this game, nor its original option is unknown, but, apparently, in the second half of the 1st millennium.e. School-east Asia, which was widespread in the Arab East, was the basis for a number of local board games, among which the Chinese chess of Xangi, Korean chess of Changi, as well as Thai Macrucru chess, much more than the first two games resembling tentrages and European chess. Apparently, from these games, in turn, the shogs and occurred.
And one more game in which you probably played, and grandfathers are still gathering in my yard and play dominoes every evening.
The roots of the game in dominoes go to India and China, it was there that bones appeared in the form of records. The dots on the bones in the Chinese domino are multi -colored (white and red), there are no dummy in the set. In the XVIII century, the game was brought to Italy and modified. Modern domino is also closely related to the game in the bone. Two halves of Domino’s knuckles are one of the possible combinations that fall out when throwing two bones. It is believed that dominoes were named after black and white masquerade costumes, which, in turn, descended from the robes of the Dominican monks, wore white cloaks with black hoods. Monks were forbidden to play cards, and then, according to legend, Abbot Domino invented dominoes. It is reliable that the game in dominoes was allowed in Catholic monasteries, and there, as a rule, any business began with the “praise of the Lord” (latch. BeneDicamus Domino or Domino Gracias) – these words were said by the player who exhibited the first stone.
You can also talk about the so -called Polish checkers.
In 1723, the English Shashist of Polish origin, who remained in history under the nickname Pole, proposed to increase the checkered board to 100 cells and slightly change the rules of the game – there were stocklet (Polish) checkers. The wide distribution and lack of discrepancies in the rules of the game made this version of the checkers by international.
Well, we finally got to the most famous Chinese board game-Majong.
According to one of the theories, the creators of the game were officers of the Chinese army who served during the Taipin uprising and invented the game to spend time, according to the other – a certain nobleman who lived in the vicinity of Shanghai between 1870 and 1875 created the game. The distribution of the game was first quite limited, until the beginning of the 20th century played only in the territory in the lower reaches of the Yangzi and in the suburbs of Beijing, but then there was a sharp jump in popularity: over the first two decades of the 20th century, the game spread throughout China and fell into neighboring countries. By 1920, Majong was already considered a national game, an integral part of Chinese culture, and was known not only in Asia, but also in America and Europe. There is also no consensus regarding the origin of the name of the game. The original name is translated as “sparrow”. According to one version, the knock of chips resembles the chirping of a sparrow. Some researchers associate the name with the fact that in China the sparrow symbolizes quick wits or look for other parallels in culture and mythology.
The first English board game in my article can be considered a reverse.
The game was invented in the UK in 1880 and was very popular, but was subsequently forgotten. They revived her in Japan, where she in 1971 under the name Othello again became popular. Since 1977, world championships in the Reversees have been regularly held.
And finally, a game appears, which compared to the others, came out relatively recently- “Monopoly”.
In 1934, at the height of the Great Depression, Charles Darrow of Hermantaun, Pennsylvania, showed representatives of the company Parker Brothers. Parker Brothers) Project of the game Monopoly. The project was rejected due to “52 mistakes in design”, but this did not stop the unemployed Charles, who decided to release the game on his own.
With the help of a friend, Charles Darrow made and sold 5,000 home -made copies of Monopoly in the Filadelphia department store. After some time, he could no longer cope with increased demand, and decided to contact the representatives of Parker Brothers again. Monopoly went down in history – already in 1935 it became the best -selling game in America. To date, the number of players in the monopoly exceeded half a billion people. The world hosts commercial competitions (including world championships) on the game of a monopoly with significant prizes.
Another game created during the Great Depression is screbble.
Her story began in the thirties of the last century in the USA. It was then that the unemployed architect Alfred Mosher Butts decided to create his own board game and in 1938 he embodies his idea.
Another known world game called “Risk”.
The game was invented by the French filmmaker Albert Lamorossi and released in France in 1957 with the name La Conqueth du Monde (translated from FR. “Conquest of the world”).
And here is the first collectible card game-Magic: The Gathering. There is simply not enough for other card games of this article, so somehow another time.
Invented by American mathematician Richard Garfield in 1991. Originally called “Mana Clash”. The rights to the publication were bought from the author by Wizards of the Coast, which released the first commercial publication on August 5, 1993. The first fans of the new game were lovers of role -playing games. Over time, she won the hearts of fans of strategies. In the mid -nineties, the world boom of collection card games erupted. Many of them did not stand out from the mass of their own kind and are now forgotten. The high -quality development, balance and competent marketing helped to survive to our days of Magic.
Well, the last game in today’s article “Colonialists”.
The creator of this board game is the famous German developer of the board games Klaus Toiber. It was first published in 1995 in Germany by FranckH-Kosmos Verlags-GmbH & Co. (Kosmos).
Well, today we plunged into the history of the appearance of the first board games and world -famous board games. As you probably could notice, I missed the description of the gameplay and everything else, but this is only a story. I will be engaged in reviews, but not these games (if you certainly do not ask), but on these ..
